Muppets and moccasins
by M.M. Lewis, March 2004

Tonight I watched the movie Muppets From Space.  The plot was somewhat stereotypical: a lonesome character goes on a quest to find family, only to end up deciding to stay with their friends when the time comes to leave with their newly-discovered family.
It got me to wondering.  Is the right course really to stay behind?  Should you stick with what you know?  There’s the possibility of giving up something better for the sake of familiarity.  And are friends necessarily more important than family?  Sure, the movie would’ve been terrible if Gonzo had deserted the rest of the Muppets.  But in a real-life situation, I think it might be a wiser decision, though possibly not the easier course, to take a chance by leaving.  Moccasin Trail was sort of like that.  Jim left behind the life he’d become accustomed to because his family needed him.
So what would I do?  Would I have the guts, the sense of adventure, to step into a completely new situation, a completely new life?  Or would I hide in the comfort of familiar friends and places?  Which would you choose?
